Finnish Heritage
Most of us grew up with saunas as a regular part of life. We still use saunas ourselves, and that firsthand experience influences how we approach the spaces we build. After years of using and visiting traditional saunas, we’ve developed an instinct for the details that matter. The finished room should look good, but more importantly, it should provide a proper sauna experience.

Skilled Carpenters and Tested Products
Our installers aren’t simply technicians who follow a set procedure. They’re skilled carpenters who can adapt when an existing wall isn’t square, a kit needs modification, or site conditions aren’t quite what everyone expected. We also test products, whenever possible, before recommending them. If we wouldn’t install something in our own sauna, we’re not going to recommend it for yours.

A Sauna Designed Around Your Massachusetts Home
Massachusetts has given us some interesting spaces to work within.
We’ve installed saunas in attics and closets, worked within complex historic homes, and restored an aging rooftop sauna in South Boston. We’ve also built saunas into new custom homes where the room could be planned around the sauna from the beginning.
That range of projects is one reason custom construction has become such an important part of what we do.
Making Difficult Spaces Work
Older homes can present framing challenges. Walls are rarely perfectly square or plumb, and attics often introduce pitched ceilings or unusual geometry.
In a historic home in Lenox, the sauna occupied a corner of the attic beneath a complex roofline. We worked closely with the architect to develop the bench layout and ventilation strategy so the unusual room could still provide comfortable temperatures and good steam quality at bench level.
We’ve encountered similar challenges in Metro Boston, where simply getting the sauna materials into the room can require some creativity.
More Freedom With Materials and Design
Some customers want the sauna to feel like it has always belonged in an older home. Others are building contemporary spaces with clean Scandinavian lines and large areas of glass.
Custom construction gives us freedom to work with both.
For architects and interior designers, our goal is to preserve the design intent while making sure the sauna performs properly. If a ceiling detail, bench layout, heater location, or other feature creates a practical problem, we’ll work through it with the project team rather than simply saying it can’t be done.
Service After Installation
One reason we shifted our focus to projects we could personally visit and install throughout New England was to help customers in person.
That’s especially valuable when a heater needs service, or something needs attention after the installation is complete.
Finn Sauna’s current service program includes a one-year warranty covering parts and labor on new saunas. It also includes a complimentary maintenance visit scheduled 8 to 14 months after installation, with additional service plans available for residential, seasonal, and commercial saunas.
Sauna Planning for Massachusetts Properties
A sauna project in the Berkshires can look very different from one outside Boston or along the Massachusetts coast. Older homes may bring unusual construction challenges, while projects closer to Boston often have limited space and difficult access. Along the coast, weather exposure and local regulations add another layer of planning.
Historic, Mountain, and Metro Massachusetts Properties
Western Massachusetts offers some beautiful sauna settings, from rolling mountain properties to historic homes. On exposed sites, we pay particular attention to wind and how the exterior components of an outdoor sauna will handle the conditions.
Older homes bring their own challenges. Existing walls may not be standard dimensions, and renovations can uncover conditions nobody expected when the project began. We’ve completed projects around Lenox, Belchertown, Amherst, and other Western Massachusetts communities.
Metro Boston tends to present a different problem: space. Parking can be limited, lots are smaller, and getting materials into the finished space isn’t always straightforward. On one project in Newton, we installed a sauna in an attic with only inches of clearance. Some pieces had to extend temporarily through an attic window before we could maneuver them into their final position.
Coastal Massachusetts and Cape Cod
Few places are as rewarding for a sauna as the New England coastline. After spending time outside in the cold ocean air, there’s nothing quite like stepping into a hot sauna while overlooking the water.
However, the coast is also hard on buildings. Strong winds, salt spray, blowing sand, and wind-driven rain all affect material selection. For outdoor saunas, we pay particular attention to weather-resistant finishes and corrosion-resistant exterior hardware.
One of our favorite projects sits directly on the waterfront in Westport. The structure and exterior materials were selected for the coastal environment, while expansive windows made the most of the ocean views.
We’ve also completed Cape Cod projects in Harwich Port and near an inland pond in Eastham. Sandy soils often provide good drainage, but foundations still need to be designed carefully to prevent settlement and long-term movement.
